Remembrance Day

Hello lovely bloggers,

Well today is 11/11/11 - a special day here in Australia  known as Remembrance Day.

Here is the what the Australian War memorial has to say:

Remembrance Day, 11 November 2011

Remembrance Day (11 November) marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

The following is a list of the customs associated with Remembrance Day:

Customs

Sydney, NSW. 1918-11-11. Crowd in Martin Place celebrating the news of the signing of the armistice. This date was celebrated in later years as Remembrance Day.

We often wear a red Flanders poppy to show our support for the day:
Australia, of course, is not the only country to celebrate Remembrance Day, other Commonwealth countries do, also - Barbados, Canada and United Kingdom as well as many other countries involved in WWI such as France and Belgium, where today is a public holiday.

This year, of course, is extra special as there will be a minute's silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year of the new millennium!

Now, on another note - don't forget my 'Just because' Giveaway, it closes in four days - you can check it out here.

Also, I am nearly at a 100 followers - if I reach 100 by the time the Giveaway closes I will have a second prize to giveaway - not sure what yet but I will think of something good.  So spread the word.

Hugs from a still sick Kaye (who now has conjunctivitis to add to her woes!)

Oh Kaye, I am so sorry that you are still not getting better. It could only get better from here on out. I would appreciate another entry in your giveaway.

Thank you for sharing some facts about Remembrance Day. In the US, we celebrate Veterans Day on 11/11/11.

I see you have a tab for the CJC2012 and the WIPocalypse. I will do that on my blog too!

Please give me another entry for your giveaway. Thank you!

Thanks for giving me a chance to know about customs associated Remembrance Day, Kane. In particular, I'm impressed with the story of red poppies.
